The second radio on Elite kits

Elite kits carry a second software-defined radio alongside the one that handles DJI detection. This article explains what it covers, why it works on one job at a time, and what that means for antennas and for troubleshooting.

What it adds

The second radio covers analog FPV video on the 5 GHz race bands and long-range telemetry and control links around 900 MHz. These are the aircraft that carry no Remote ID and fly outside the bands a Remote ID receiver watches. The radio is fitted at manufacture. A Pro kit cannot take it later.

One mission at a time

The radio is wideband and is retuned in software to whichever mission is configured. It does not sweep several bands at once. Two consequences follow:

  • A kit set to the FPV video mission is not watching the 900 MHz band, and the reverse.
  • DJI and Remote ID detection are unaffected. They run on separate receivers and continue whichever mission is active.

Because the radio is wideband, additional missions can be added through software releases without replacing hardware.

Antennas and ports

Each mission has its own antenna and its own port. On Elite hardware the front panel is silkscreened FPV 5.8 Ghz and FPV 900. Those are hardware labels: the 5 GHz port serves FPV video activity and the 900 MHz port serves control and telemetry links. Match each antenna to its etched label and torque the connector to 3–5 in-lb. Antennas are not interchangeable between ports.

If a signal is not showing up

  • Confirm the antenna for that band is on the matching port and is firmly seated.
  • Confirm the mission that is currently configured matches the signal you are testing.
  • Remember the radio only reports what is on the air. Detection distance depends on antenna selection, height, line of sight, and the RF environment.
